Wild Card Race

Last season the Colorado Rockies made an incredible run in The National League West that saw them take the wild card with incredible play in the last two months of the season. Rockies fans were surprised when that run took them to the big show and they had to buy World Series tickets for Coors Field.

That year the key was the pitching was the key to that club. The seasons before saw the Rockies dominate offensively and crumble on the mound. This year they are falling to pieces everywhere. That pitching staff that was finally supposed to prove that pitches could survive in the mountain air of Denver has failed to make the same impact. Ubaldo Jimenez and Jeff Francis have ERAs typical of Rockies pitchers before them. Aaron Cook is not having a bad year. In fact he is having a pretty great year. His ERA is under control and his record is just about the only impressive thing on the staff.

With the MLB All Star game coming up his name has to be under consideration by the National league managers for the staff. Closer Brain Fuentes has not been bad either, but he has not gotten the save opportunities to justify picking him.

At home it is just weird to see the Rockies struggle to score runs. For years Rockies tickets at the very least made sure the fans had an exciting high-scoring game to watch. This year something is wrong. Matt Holliday’s numbers are down from the last two seasons. His contact hitting is fine, but his power numbers and RBIs are way down.

Nobody on the Rockies has decent power numbers. Maybe M. Night Shyamalan should do a movie about the mysterious disappearance of home runs from Coors Field. All of Denver could be in a rage as the sky falls all over the base of the Rocky Mountains.

The season is still very early and the Rockies could go on another amazing run that will defy the ages again. The problem is that the Arizona Diamondbacks may be starting to pull away in the West, leaving every other team behind. They may be the first team to in MLB to clinch a playoff spot. The Rockies can try and make another run at the wild card, but the Cardinals are making sure they do not miss this post season.

Denver has had a tough year so far in sports and it would be nice is the Denver sports teams actually started making games worth going to. The Broncos are confused at quarterback, the Avalanche are an average hockey team at best, and the Nuggets have no clue how to play defense. The Rockies the latest installment in sports disappointments.
